Honda Spocket - convertible hybrid sport pick-up truck |
||||||
First presented in Tokyo autoshow 1999, later at NAIAS 2000, it is made by Honda R & D Americas, Inc., in Torrance. The front wheels are driven by a gasoline engine, and the rear ones - by electric motors. Lambo-style doors (LSD), nice sporty front and convertible bac makes it a good looking and innovative pocket-rocket concept. Design and construction of the Spocket took eight months to complete, and was inspired by Honda's T360 mid-engine pickup truck, produced in 1963. People are leaving town on the spur of the moment for the beach, the mountains, or just simply to get away. In the future, they'll be escaping with the help of a multi-purpose vehicle like the Honda Spocket, which delivers not only sporty performance but also satisfying utility, Honda believes.At the touch of a button, the Spocket changes from four seats to two and the clamshell top retracts to provide open-air driving. Spocket has compact, stylish body of a super lightweight sports car, the cargo deck can be extended in length by folding the rear seatback, and the roof can slide back for open-top driving. Folding the bulkhead between the cabin and deck reveals a rear seat for two extra passengers. The interior features bucket seats made from durable fabrics that will withstand any weather condition. Additional interior features include Honda’s GPS Navigation system and electric controls. Instead of sideview mirrors, the Spocket has cameras that project rear images to a heads-up display on the front windshield.
While gasoline engine rotates the front wheels, two powerfull electric motors spins the rear ones, making this sporty small car a four-wheel-drive enabled. In addition, there’s a semi-automatic, five-speed transmission with shift buttons located on the steering wheel. "With its hybrid gasoline-electric drivetrain and chameleon-like body, the Spocket exemplifies Honda's design creativity and technological ingenuity," said Elliott.
