Honda City history begun in 1981, as a subcompact Asia market car. Discontinued in 1994, re-started in 1996 and manufactured until present times. The first generation - 1981-1986 cars was small, rather two-seaters, but had something attractive - turboed engines with 81 kw (105 HP) and wide bodies. Yes - stock turbocharged Hondas! That's why we will take a better look at these small pocket-rockets.
Fiorst generation Honda City GA1was launched in 1981, and manufactured till 1986, when replaced with GA2 (generation2) that was produced till discontinuing in 1994 (for such a long time!) The Fit name also first appeared as a trim variant of the City.
Honda City Turbo II was manufactured from 1983. It is equipped with 105 hp/81 kW at 5000 rpm and 159Nm at 3000 rpm. torque engine, managed by Honda’s PGM-F1 fuel injection and an 8-bit digital computer control unit. It's ER-series 1.2-litre inline-4 cylinder engine, normal, turbocharged engine, not like the ones used in Daihatsu Charade, 3 cylinders. Little RHB51 turbo and sufficient engine capacity almost eliminated turbo lag, and car weighting only 720 kg could make 1/4 mile in 16 seconds! And this was with stock 12Psi turbo boost and loosy intercooler position. Handling is bias toward understeer, but with a car this small you barely need to turn the wheel to negotiate corners - you can take the motorcycle racing line! The steering is responsive but - curiously - it is very heavy at parking speeds, depending on the tyres fitted. Power steering was never offered as an option.
Honda City Turbo was created by Hirotoshi Honda, son of Soichiro Honda. Hirotoshi is also the founder and owner of Mugen, Honda tuning company.
